The Lost Soul
Sunday, March 29, 2009

The wild laughter of a group of children rang loudly through the sky along with the splash of waves upon the sandy beach. Some of the kids dashed around chasing each other while some others picked seashells. The younger ones stayed near their family making sand castles of all shapes and sizes.

"Let's cross the bridge over to that smaller island over there!" Mother Nan pointed to the island across the bridge and called out to everyone. The elated kids raced each other across the bridge wondering what they could find on the other side. Everyone was on cloud nine. It was a happy family gathering for the family of 15.

They were on a 3 days, 2 nights holiday at RasaS Hotel and had chosen to spend their first day there on the sandy beach. The oldest amongst them at the age of 72 and the youngest as young as 5. They hadn't had such an outing in a long while and it was fruitful to see the euphoric look comfortably settled on the face of all.

As they reached the other island, the older kids raced around exploring the little island with the maids trailing behind them. The younger ones together with the adults explored the area for a place to sit. Finally finding some large rocks beneath a few tall coconut trees, Greatgrandmother dusted the rock and sat down comfortably. She stretched out her frail and fair hand and called out to one of the younger kids.

"Come Jac, Come. Have a sit beside me.."

Little Jac obediently rushed to the side of her Greatgrandmother and with a huge grin, pulled her tights and sat down cozily beside her. Together with Greatgrandmother, they both sat there in silence, enjoying the serene scenery while watching the people around them chat noisly. All was blissed and fun with no worries and no unhappiness.

Suddenly, there was a loud cry of fear! Little Jac screamed for her mother who frantically rushed to her side as startled Greatgrandmother worriedly asked Jac, who was as pale as sheet, what was wrong. "There is a colourful worm on my tights! Get it off of me please..." Jac whined hysterically in fear. Mother Nan laughed as she dust off the worm and simply commented that it was nothing to worry about. Greatgrandmother gently consoled Jac, telling her that a worm was like a guardian protecting her.

Everything seemed to be fine again as Jac's sobs faded and she obediently trotted alongside of Greatgrandmother all the way back to the Hotel after a long day at the beach. However, back at the Hotel, Jac suddenly vomitted and refused to eat her dinner. She just stoned upon the bed as she fell ill and suffered from high fever. Everyone was worried as she did not answer anyone's call. It was as if she was alone in another world.

Grandmother told Mother Nan in dialect, "her soul might have flown away at the Beach this afternoon when she got frightened by the worm. We must call her soul back quickly." As the older aunts agreed with Grandmother's claim, Mother Nan asked Greatgrandmother to stay with Jac while they along with Jac's siblings went to the Beach to call her soul back.

Under the moonlight, the cries for Jac could be heard across the beach as the family walked up and down the beach frantically calling for her. Anyone who walked passed them were bewildered and hurriedly left the area thinking that someone might have drowned there. Poor Jac's siblings who were not much older than her were scared and confused thinking that their sister has met with a dire mishap.

Returning back to the Hotel, exhausted and worried, the whole family were comforted and ecstatic to see that Jac was happily playing with her toys and responding to the cries of her family. It was as though nothing had happened at all.

No one knew for sure if her soul was truly lost out at sea at that point of time, but it did not matter to anyone for Jac was back to normal and that was all that mattered.

You might not like this story, because I, myself personally feel that my composition and english has deteriorated badly. I felt a need to tell this story as it is a true story. It happened and believe it or not, its up to you.
